Dave Southern Testimony
David Southern's Story
Farewell Nan
I was holding my Nan's hand when her life slipped away and she breathed her last. I knew she was with Jesus now and I didn't feel too bad about her passing away. For as long as I could remember we had prayed together in the morning and in the evening. There were times when I would rush off to school without praying and my Nan would say If you oversleep it is better to be late for school than to miss your prayers. Seven days without prayer makes one weak. Now there I was a twenty year old knowing I'd miss my Nan and her prayers.
Hotshots
Within a few months I started to slip away from God. I had asked Jesus into my life when I was eight and always knew God as my friend. Now I was more interested in girls at work and gaining promotion from an engineer to a manager. I thought I'd arrived when I became an assistant manager at a bar called Hotshots and Jumpin' Jaks in Brighton town centre.
Marie Currie Centre
Then I found out that my Mum had cancer. I'd been drifting for eight years, but now I started to pray again. God heal my Mum, heal my mum. The doctors described the cancer as ferocious. Mum's health got worse, so I quit my job and left Brighton to move back to Liverpool. It was the worst time of my life - my Godly mum was dying. My mum became a patient at the Marie Currie Centre and she was unable to speak due to a tracheotomy operation. All I did was read Bible stories to her, pray for her healing and go to sleep. In November 1999 my mum went to be with Jesus (and my Nan). Through this horrendous period of my life God looked after me in a way that I can't describe but I will always remember.
What Now?
All I knew was that I wanted to live for Jesus.I started to work at the Jaguar plant for a while, but I felt God had something else in mind for me. In September I started a Frontier Year Project, which involves theology study and working for a Church.
